Background Change on Maine Coon

While I had the oil pastels out I painted a Maine Coon cat using both oil pastels and acrylics. I used a grey mountboard to work on and didn't add a background.

However after revisiting the image I decided the colour of the background didn't add anything at all, in fact I decided it was detracting from the cat. So gave it a blended oil pastel background.

Here are the before and after versions, I've also changed the crop on the final version although I'm still undecided on that.

The darker background looks so much better Gayle, but not sure of the crop, I prefer the original.
I didn't know you used oil pastels?

Wow what difference the background made. And I like the crop also. Beautiful!

I left a comment earlier today, but it doesnt seem to have made it onto your blog...strange. I just wanted to say that I like the new background very much, it is very effective, and I prefer the original crop.

I'm glad you all like the darker background, I'm still undecided on the crop. I might add the left corner of the cat in so that it isn't quite so disembodied head looking.

I've only just started using oil pastels Bev, I quite like them but get frustrated with the difficulty in creating detail.
